New Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang Marks a Rebirth of Cool

For many Ford fans, the name Carroll Shelby is synonymous with cool. The native-born Texan and race car driver is perhaps best known for designing the Shelby Cobra and Shelby Mustang that bear his name.

In honoring Shelby’s legacy, Ford recently unveiled the 2016 Shelby GT350 Mustang in Gardena, California. Appropriately enough, the site of the announcement was the upcoming Shelby Automotive Museum, which is located at the Shelby facilities in Gardena where Shelby spent much of his adult life. Ford also displayed the vehicle at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The all-new Shelby GT350 Mustang offers a new millennium spin on a timeless classic. Introduced in 1965, the original Shelby GT350 was a high-performance version of the Ford Mustang that has been affectionately referred to as the “pony car.” The latest edition of this old-school classic still features the iconic long hood and short deck, along with a flat-plane crankshaft 5.2-liter V8 engine that produces more than 500 horsepower.

In a statement, Ford emphasized that the V8 engine of the 2016 Shelby GT350 will produce “the most powerful naturally aspirated Ford production engine ever.” They also add that the “new 5.2-liter engine is the first-ever production V8 from Ford with a flat-plane crankshaft, an architecture typically found only in racing applications or exotic European sports cars.”

A sleeker and more aerodynamic design is another notable characteristic of this sixth-generation Ford Mustang that distinguishes it from its predecessors. Ford describes the 2016 Shelby as “track-savvy but street-friendly” due to a new driver control system that adjust the anti-lock system, stability and traction control, steering effort, throttle mapping, suspension dampening and exhaust systems.

The 2016 Shelby GT350 Mustang will be available for purchase in the second half of 2015. While the price of the latest Shelby has yet to be revealed, experts expect that customers will pay two times as much as a stock Mustang GT, which costs $32,000. So be sure to start saving up now, Mustang-heads!
