The Ford Focus RS packs a great deal of power in a compact car package, with a 2.3-liter turbocharged engine that can produce 350 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. It can also go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, which isn't a surprise considering that it was designed with input from professional rally driver Ken Block. For this reason, it shouldn't come as a shock that the Ford Focus RS would be Block’s vehicle of choice as he competes in the 2016 FIA World Rallycross Championship.
The Ford Performance division will sponsor Block’s Hoonigan Racing Division as it represents the Ford brand in this year’s FIA rallycross competition. The Hoonigan Racing Division will receive full factory backing, which includes access to two 2016 Ford Focus RS models that the team is scheduled to race in the FIA World Rallycross event on April 15-17.
Ford Performance has a long and proud tradition of backing talented and accomplished racing teams under the Ford Performance Rallye Sport (RS) badge. The innovative and stylish vehicles produced by Ford have resulted in several FIA World Rallycross Championship wins over the years.
In short, says Ford Performance global director Dave Pericak, the Ford Performance RS is an imprimatur of success.
"RS is a worldwide brand with a rich heritage that motorsports enthusiasts know and love," said Pericak. "Our RS badge has a natural connection to racing, and we have a passionate, dedicated team on the project. We’re excited to honor the history of Rallye Sport by pushing every aspect of performance and design to the limit."
The assembly of the Focus RS was a collaborative effort between Ford Performance, the Hoonigan Racing team and M-Sport, an auto racing team based in the U.K. The race-ready Focus RS contains even more power than its street-legal equivalent—Block’s RS model can produce 600 horsepower with a 0 to 60 time under two seconds.
Block expressed his excitement in continuing his productive relationship with Ford.
"I'm really happy to be expanding my relationship with Ford Performance," said Block. "To have official factory support for my race season in 2016 and beyond as I enter the FIA World Rallycross Championship full-time is absolutely incredible. It opens up a ton of powerful resources that myself and my team will be able to benefit from in terms of engineering prowess, research, development and racing experience from different fields."
Ford Performance recently posted on its YouTube channel the latest edition of Block’s video series, Gymkhana 8. The word gymkhana refers to a racing competition between motorsports drivers (as well as equestrians) with the goal of finishing with the fastest possible time. As presented by Ford Performance and its corporate partners, Gymkhana 8 showcases Block’s world-class motorsports skills as he drives in two distinct locations: Dubai and Los Angeles. Block performs amazing stunts in exotic locales, culminating in a brief look at the Ford Focus RS RX.
