Ford Creates New Subsidiary Company for Smart Mobility Projects

The future of the auto industry is in smart mobility. With the advent of innovative technologies like autonomous vehicles, the experience of driving will be revolutionized in the coming years. Even a company with the long and venerable history of the Ford Motor Company must develop smart mobility solutions just to keep up with its peers inside the auto industry, as well as companies outside of it.

With that in mind, Ford announced the creation of Ford Smart Mobility LLC, a subsidiary company whose purpose is to design, develop and fund smart mobility services. The chairman for the new Ford subsidiary is Jim Hackett (pictured), who resigned his role on the Ford Board of Directors that he'd held since 2013. With this newly created subsidiary, Ford is set to compete with upstart tech companies and ride sharing services that are making inroads in the smart mobility field.

In the main, Ford's operations as a automotive company dedicated to the manufacturing and selling of vehicles. Through its smart mobility subsidiary, however, Ford will focus on a variety of forward-looking projects such as autonomous vehicles, connectivity and mobility. These projects include any smart mobility products and technologies in the process of being developed by the Ford parent company. One of the first projects to be tackled by Ford Smart Mobility LLC is the Dynamic Shuttle service initiated late last year.

According to Ford president and CEO Mark Fields, the possibilities for smart mobility are endless -not to mention highly lucrative.

"Ford Smart Mobility and expanding into mobility services are significant growth opportunities," said Fields. "Our plan is to quickly become part of the growing transportation services market, which already accounts for $5.4 trillion in annual revenue."

Ford Smart Mobility LLC should be poised for success under the leadership of Hackett, who was formerly a vice chairman and CEO at furniture manufacture Steelcase. Hackett spent a highly successful three-decade tenure at Steelcase before joining the Ford Board of Directors about three years ago.

Hackett embraces the possibilities of his new role as chairman of Ford Smart Mobility LLC.

"I am absolutely thrilled to lead Ford's mobility business into the future," said Hackett. "Transportation in the world today is on the cusp of a major revolution, and Ford plans to lead the way by changing the way the world moves through Ford Smart Mobility."

Fields expressed his full confidence in Hackett as Ford Smart Mobility LLC chairman.

"Jim Hackett is the right visionary leader - with extensive experience in business development and design - to take us into the mobility services business in the future," he said.

Ford and its new subsidiary will work in concert to develop smart mobility services for the commercial market. Ford Smart Mobility LLC will have all the advantages of having a major auto company behind it, while at the same time operating with the autonomy of a startup. This arrangement should prove beneficial for Ford going forward, enabling it to adjust to any changes and challenges that may come in a rapidly developing automotive landscape.
