As the calendar turns to September, the Ford Motor Company has much to celebrate on the sales front. In fact, this August commemorates the company’s best U.S. retail sales month since 2006.
Last month, Ford’s total sales reached 234,237 among all vehicles in its lineup. This represents a 5 percent increase over the previous year.
"Customer demand for our newest vehicles made August a strong month for Ford," said Mark LaNeve, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. "Improved availability helped make August the strongest sales month this year for F-Series. We also had our best month of Ford SUV sales in 12 years."
The F-Series was among Ford’s most profitable models in August with 71,332 pickups sold, its best sales mark in nine years. Moreover, this August marks the first time that the F-Series has exceeded 70,000 sales. Much of that sales success can be particularly credited to the F-150 EcoBoost vehicle series, which is responsible for 63 percent of total F-150 sales in August.
The robust sales of the F-150 do much to vindicate Ford’s decision to revamp its body construction from steel to aluminum. It was seen as a risky call, given that Ford had used steel to build its F-150 pickups for decades. Despite the financial cost associated with the switch, Ford hopes that utilizing the cheaper, more lightweight aluminum will have a long-term positive effect on its bottom line.
Other successful vehicle segments for Ford include vans and SUVs. Sales of the all-new Transit vans totaled 69,077, propelling Ford to its best van sales performance in over 20 years. Moreover, new models like the Edge and Explorer helped to account for 69,077 SUVs sold, which represents Ford’s best segment sales since 2003.
Ford’s August success mirrors overall trends in the industry with regard to vehicle sales. According to Autodata, auto sales in August throughout the industry are ahead of the pace predicted by most experts.
Jesse Hurwitz, an economist with Barclays, assessed what this positive news might mean for the auto industry going forward.
"As one of the earliest and most reliable indicators of goods consumption, we take positive signal from stronger-than-expected August vehicle sales," he said. "Consumer sentiment has moderated a bit in recent months as financial market volatility and concerns over international growth have increased; however, these data indicate that consumption should hold up despite these factors."
