One of the most hotly anticipated vehicles of the year is the 2016 Ford Explorer. So hotly anticipated, in fact, that Ford recently announced that they will shorten the summer shutdown to one week in order to meet increasing customer demand for the Explorer, in addition to the Edge, Escape and F-150.
As one of the country's most popular automakers, Ford has several highly ranked models among the best-selling vehicles in the U.S. One of the key reasons for Ford’s success has been its popularity among women, which may be attributable to the women who run the company and design its cars. Ford has been an industry leader with regard to the number of women within the company who hold engineering and corporate leadership positions.
Diversity in the workforce has been a core value for the Ford Motor Company since the days when Henry Ford himself ran it. Throughout Ford’s long history, women have played key roles in many of the company’s major accomplishments. In commemorating those accomplishments, Ford celebrated National Women’s History Month this March by highlighting four women—Marcy Fisher, Michele Lubin Henney, Susan Lampinen and Melanie Banker—who helped make the Ford Mustang the definition of “masculine cool” for the past five decades.
Women represent a significant portion of Ford’s labor force across all levels of the company. According to a 2013-14 sustainability report, women make up about 22 percent of Ford’s domestic workforce (including hourly and salaried employees), as well as 26 percent of its global workforce. Of that global percentage, 17 percent held positions in the company that were at the middle management level and above. Moreover, outside groups and agencies have recognized Ford for their commitment to diversity.
