Among the top selling vehicles across the United States are crossover SUVs. A crossover by definition is a vehicle that have features of both consumer cars and sport utility vehicles. In most cases, they are built on a car’s “chassis”, and typically have front wheel or all-wheel drive systems and exceptional handling capability compared to full SUV models. The Ford line-up features three different crossover SUV’s for 2017 & 2018 including the legendary Explorer, Flex and the Escape. Each offers unique attributes that provide value to different consumers.
Noted below are a few of the highlights of each vehicle so you can pick one that is best suited to your individual needs.
The Ford Explorer
Regarded as a household name for more than two decades, the Ford Explorer has undergone a tremendous evolution in recent years. The newest Explorers include three-row seating and multiple trim levels. The Explorer is the largest of the three Ford crossover SUV vehicles. A 3.5-liter V-6 engine is included in the standard edition. A turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder and a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 are available for upgraded trim levels. The Explorer is available in front and all-wheel drive models. The premium sport appearance package for the XLT trim level includes 20-inch gray wheels, black and gray exterior trim, and leather and suede seats.
Many people consider the Ford Explorer a full SUV due to its off-road appearance. However, since its primary entry-level vehicle is front wheel drive, it falls perfectly into the crossover category. The extra size makes it a great solution for those looking for more cargo space, with multiple children, or people looking for a sporty crossover with off-road capability.
The Ford Flex
Debuting in 2009, the Ford Flex has steadily become a popular selling vehicle in many US states. The versatile layout and surprising interior space of the Flex gives consumers more options to consider. Unlike the Explorer which has an off-road primary look, the Flex is a larger crossover wagon that still can seat up to 7 passengers. It is available in SE, SEL, and Limited trims. The 3.5-liter V6 engine is standard and delivers a peppy 287 horsepower. Power is supplied by way of an automatic six-speed transmission and is available in front or all-wheel drive versions.
The Ford Escape
For those in search of a crossover SUV with loads of customizable options, including trim levels and updated technology features, the 2018 Ford Escape is among the smarter choices on the market. The new 2018 Ford Escape is available in S, SE, SEL, and Titanium trim options. The S model is essentially a base model and is a great choice for those searching for fleet vehicle options. The SE model includes upgraded wheels, tires, and engine, as well as a power-adjustable driver seat and more. The SEL trim adds to the SE model with multiple convenience features, such as smartphone integration, and an even more powerful engine combination.
