No, the 2019 Ford Edge ST is not here at Elk Grove Ford yet, but you can’t blame us for being excited by the prospect. All of the 2019 Edge trims have received an exterior and interior refresh, but the big news is the introduction of the ST trim, the change up in engines, and a cornucopia of available technology. This mid-size SUV is going to be truly awesome.
The roomy, two row, mid-size Edge is a favorite with our customers in the Sacramento area for its performance, fuel economy, and reliability. The 2019 version is about to bump up expectations in each of those categories. Let’s start with the powertrain. The four-cylinder turbo has retuned to deliver 5 more horsepower for a total of 250 and is mated to a new, fuel saving eight speed automatic transmission. MPG numbers are not available yet, but we expect to see an improvement over 2018.
The Sport trim has been replaced by the new ST. This exciting AWD beast is powered by Ford’s second-generation twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 that generates an impressive 335 horsepower and 385 lb-ft of torque (performance SUV territory). It also benefits from the new eight-speed transmission, this time equipped with paddle shifters for snappier performance.
All That’s Missing is the Kitchen Sink Technology-Wise
Ford is all about offering value, and their decision to pack all 2019 Edge trims with a ton of technology demonstrates their commitment to that objective. Many brands save their top-end technology for their top tier models, but Ford is spreading the love to make the Edge as technologically advanced as any vehicle in the lineup.
In 2019, every Edge will have onboard, as standard equipment, automated emergency braking, forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beams as standard equipment. The adaptive cruise-control provides semi-autonomous driving and can bring the car to a complete stop when driver fatigue is detected. In addition, a new safety technology, evasive steering-assist, is available. This system uses cameras and radar to bolster defensive driving inputs.
Then there’s connectivity. Has Alexa become an important part of your family? Now you can take her with you thanks to the SYNC infotainment system support of Ford + Alexa app. Edge’s Wi-Fi hotspot will support up to 10 devices to keep everybody connected all the time. The Edge is a virtual streaming machine.
The real advantage of all these systems is reinforcing driver confidence. Convenience is great, but the real value is the knowledge that there are any number of automated safety systems protecting the driver and passengers.
New for 2019
You have more Edge trims to choose from. In 2019, there are 5 trims compared to 3 for 2018. Those two extra trims are both pretty special. We’ve already talked about the brute known as the ST, so that leaves the ultra-luxurious Platinum Elite.
If you are accustomed to traveling in first class, the Platinum ride with all of its interior and exterior upgrades is the ride for you.
